Schibsted’s product ambition is to reinvent our media destinations for the AI era to make our journalism a relevant daily habit for more people. Most of that work happens in our existing product organisation, where we continuously improve and reinvent products used by millions of people every day. But some opportunities require something different: more freedom from today’s products and business models, longer horizons, greater uncertainty and permission to challenge the core.
That's why we're setting up Schibsted Product Lab.
Product Lab is a small, autonomous product environment that builds, launches and tests the next generation of Schibsted’s media products with real users. We start small, increase investment as evidence grows, stop ideas that do not prove themselves, and help successful products become part of, or reshape, Schibsted’s core.
We are now looking for an Editorial Developer to join the Product Lab core team!
How we want to work
Our ambition is to make Product Lab an AI-enabled, high-velocity product environment where we can move from idea to execution at high speed. We want to push the boundaries of how emerging technologies can transform the way we discover, design and build products, equipping small teams with the tools and capabilities to turn ambitious ideas into real user experiences in days rather than months. We embrace experimentation, challenge established ways of working and prioritise learning over perfection. And we see the ability to confidently stop an idea that doesn't work as just as important as knowing when to invest further.
The role and missionAs Editorial Developer in Product Lab, you will work at the intersection of journalism, technology, product and design to explore what the next generation of media destinations could look like.
You will combine deep editorial understanding with technical curiosity and hands-on experimentation, turning emerging technologies, changing user behaviours and new ideas into concrete editorial experiences.
This is a role tasked with challenging assumptions about how journalism works, exploring entirely new ways of bringing journalistic value to people, and making those possibilities real enough to test.
You will be part of Product Lab's small permanent core team, working across early-stage initiatives alongside product managers, designers, engineers and colleagues from Schibsted's editorial organisations.
What you will do
-
Identify new editorial opportunities, exploring how emerging technologies and changing user behaviours could transform how journalism is created, distributed and experienced.
-
Develop, prototype and test new editorial concepts, working hands-on with Product, UX and Tech to turn ideas into tangible experiments with real users.
-
Define the editorial logic of new products, including what information they provide, how it is selected, produced or transformed, and how humans and AI systems collaborate.
-
Shape editorial quality and principles, navigating questions of accuracy, trust, transparency, accountability and editorial independence in new product concepts.
-
Assess editorial and operational feasibility, identifying the capabilities, workflows, resources and organisational changes needed to bring promising concepts to life.
-
Connect Product Lab with Schibsted's editorial environments, bringing relevant newsroom expertise into initiatives and helping promising concepts find pathways into existing brands and organisations.
We are looking for someone who combines strong journalistic understanding, technical fluency and a genuine drive to build what comes next.
You might come from editorial development, digital journalism, newsroom innovation, interactive storytelling, editorial product development or a related field. Your exact background matters less than your ability to move between journalistic ideas, technological possibilities and practical experimentation.
You are equally comfortable discussing editorial principles with an editor, exploring technical possibilities with a developer and making something tangible enough to test with users.
We believe you need to bring:
-
Deep understanding of journalism and editorial environments, including hands-on experience with editorial decision-making, journalistic methods and newsroom workflows.
-
Experience developing and testing digital editorial products, formats or experiences, with a user-oriented approach to turning ideas into tangible solutions and learning from feedback.
-
Technical fluency and hands-on prototyping skills, with the ability to independently build, configure or experiment with digital solutions using code, AI tools, low-code platforms or other relevant technologies.
-
Strong understanding of AI and emerging technologies, combined with curiosity about how they could reshape journalism, editorial workflows and audience experiences.
-
Experience working across editorial, product and technology disciplines, translating between different perspectives and driving ideas forward in cross-functional teams.
Experience with AI-native products, editorial automation, data journalism, interactive storytelling or emerging distribution environments will be particularly valuable.
Beyond your experience, we believe how you approach the work matters just as much. You are curious, resourceful and comfortable with uncertainty. You enjoy making things rather than only discussing them, and you know when to build something yourself and when to bring in others. You are collaborative, pragmatic and willing to challenge established assumptions.
Most importantly, you are editorially grounded without being bound to traditional formats or ways of working. You care deeply about journalism and its role in society, but you are excited to question how it should be created and experienced in the future.
Why join us-
You help build something new from the start. You join the Lab's first core team and shape how it works and what its culture becomes.
-
You build on things a start-up has to earn first. Trusted brands, our journalism, our data and millions of users.
-
Your work reaches real users. We launch to learn, and products that work have a path into VG, Aftonbladet and our other brands.
-
You get room to work and clear decisions. The Lab works outside today's roadmaps and KPIs, and every idea gets a clear decision at set points.
-
You work on what's changing in media. AI is changing how people find and use journalism, and young people are forming their habits outside traditional news sites. You help decide what Schibsted's answer looks like.
Schibsted is the largest news provider in the Nordics, with brands such as VG, Aftonbladet, TV4, MTV, Aftenposten, Svenska Dagbladet, and Podme. Every day we inform, engage, and entertain millions of people across Sweden, Norway, and Finland.
Since 1839, trust has been our foundation. Our journalism empowers people, builds communities, and strengthens democracy – and innovation ensures we continue to protect that mission.
Our democracies depend on independent journalism. That’s our business.
